This three-part sculpture was installed at the Sydenham Gallery grounds, just north
of Kingston, Ontario, in 1989. The initial project was more ambitious, but I soon
realized that I would have to be content with a head and two hands. The hilly grounds
of the gallery were an ideal spot to install the biblical Saul, the tragic first
king of Israel, now transformed and attempting to come out of the ground in a new
world, and he acquires a suitable local headdress for the occasion.
The sculpture is made of wood, some parts painted,

and held together with glue and screws. The head is perhaps 2’ high. The three
pieces were later exhibited at Kozak Gallery, Toronto.
